💥 Toxic phrases that do more harm than good 💥
Has this ever happened to you before?
😔 You’re feeling down and others are saying things to try and make you feel better, but listening to those things just aren’t helping or make you feel worse❓
Or…Your friend is stressed about something and you want to cheer them up, but it seems like you’re not helping❓
Today, NEXKY will help you list out some ❌ phrases to AVOID ❌ and why sometimes they might do more harm than good!
1. “Good vibes only.”
Being stressed or depressed is not about having the wrong mentality. If you say “good vibes only,” it might show that you’re ignoring your friend’s situation and telling them to just change their mood as if it is easy and doable.
2. “Cheer up.”
Saying this might convey the meaning that they have to fight this battle alone. It is also the phrase people would just say to end the conversation quickly.
3. “I completely understand you.”
No one could ever experience the same exact things that others have. We all have different paths we have walked on and will walk on. Even though it might sound nice to say, this could lead to comparison and worsen your friend’s mentality.
4. “This happened to me before too.”
Again, no one could experience the same things. Saying this is shifting the spotlight onto yourself! You’re not actually being a good listener. The conversation will slowly be filled with YOUR story. Your friend will feel like their stories are not being heard and feel lonely.
5. “It’s not a big deal. You’ll get over it.”
Your small problems might be ‘big’ for others and vice versa! You have no right to judge whether others’ problems are trivial. Additionally, mental health is not something that time could heal. Saying “you’ll get over it” is another way to end the conversation quickly and your friend will be left alone with their thoughts.
6. “It could be worse.”
This phrase will make you an indifferent person. You are disregarding your friend’s situation as insignificant, even when your friend is feeling the complete opposite. It will also make your friend feel bad for feeling like so.
7. “Other people have it worse.”
Again, you’re comparing your friend to others and say that they should be lucky they are in this situation because it is not that bad.
